Equipping Students with Teaching Skills for Tomorrow

Dedicated to teacher training, the College of Education aims to equip students with practical teaching competence. Our programs focus on cultivating three broad qualities: the open-mindedness and broad thinking of the ever-learning teacher, the ability to engage with the community and make a positive social impact, and the ability to know the needs of one’s students.

Teacher Training Program

As the world grows ever more complex, schools face an increasingly daunting array of challenges.

Schools need teachers who have the knowledge to grasp the challenges, the practical skills to adapt to the challenges and take the necessary action, and the human skills to uncover the potential of their students and help them grow. All students enrolled in this program will learn the content they need to obtain a license to teach at elementary schools in Japan. They will also gain broad problem-solving skills, in-depth pedagogical knowledge, and practical teaching skills. The aim of the program is to produce teachers who are dedicated to supporting the growth and development of their students. In addition, students can gain more specialized competence: Depending on the courses and electives they take, they can either learn the subject-specific content they need to obtain a license to teach at junior high schools in Japan, or the specialized subject-specific content they need to obtain a license to teach at schools for children with special needs in Japan. All students will aim to obtain a license to teach at elementary schools and, depending on their course choices, either a license to teach at junior high schools or a license to teach at schools for children with special needs. However, students can also obtain additional licenses and qualifications (such as those necessary for teaching at kindergartens or high schools in Japan) by earning the necessary credits. This program welcomes students who have the basic knowledge and skills needed to learn the broad content necessary for teaching at elementary schools, junior high schools, or schools for children with special needs, as well as a passion for teaching children.

School Nurse (Yogo) Teacher Training Program

The world has become more stressed than ever before. Children suffer many kinds of mental and physical health problems. By dealing with these challenges in their own idiosyncratic ways, children can grow. However, in the process of doing so, children often require support to maintain mental and physical health. That is, they need someone in whom they can confide their feelings and problems. The School Nurse (Yogo) Teacher Training Program produces individuals dedicated to supporting the wellbeing of schoolchildren.A school nurse (Yogo) teacher is a special licensed educator who supports children’s growth and development through health education and health services on the basis of health promotion in all areas of educational activities at school, similar to school nurses.Students in this program will obtain a Yogo teacher license. With this license, the holder is qualified to act as a Yogo teacher at kindergartens, elementary schools, junior high schools, high schools, and schools for children with special needs. Students can also obtain additional licenses and qualifications (such as a health teacher license, which is a license to teach the health-related subjects at junior high and/ or high schools) by earning the necessary credits. The program comprises the following courses, which provide the grounding necessary for obtaining a Yogo teacher license: school nursing, school health and general health, medical science and nursing, and teaching. These subjects are wide-ranging. Therefore, this program welcomes students who have the basic abilities necessary to learn these subjects. Students are also expected to display a passion for becoming a Yogo teacher.
